Museums for Peace. Memories and Difficult Heritage

On 15.06.2026 (16:00-18:00), the PhD Club Buena Vista Social Club invites you to the book presentation of "Museos para la Paz. Memorias y patrimonios difíciles" (Museums for Peace. Memories and Difficult Heritage) with Diana Ordóñes Castillo.

Museos para la Paz. Memorias y patrimonios difíciles.

Diana Ordóñez Castillo and Alexander Herrera Wassilowsk (authors and editors). Ediciones Uniandes, 2025

The book focuses on how forms of knowledge, languages, emotions and rationalities arising from memory initiatives that emerge from the margins and outside the mainstream are paradigmatic examples of peacebuilding. Its twelve chapters summarise current discussions on the aesthetic and political capacity of the repertoires deployed to deal with difficult knowledge and heritage. This publication stems from the research and creation project “Museos para la Paz”, launched in 2020 by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Development Studies (Cider), part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the Andes. It has been directed by Professors Diana Ordoñez Castillo and Alexander Herrera Wassilowski. The project has fostered horizontal dialogues on the intertwining of long-term memories with commemorative practices stemming from recent acts of violence, establishing links with social, youth, peasant and women’s organisations that have adopted the preservation of memories as a mechanism of resistance.
Diana Ordóñez Castillo holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of the Andes (Colombia) and in Social Sciences from Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (Germany). She is currently a professor in the undergraduate Anthropology programme and the Master’s in Peacebuilding at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the Andes. During her professional career, spanning more than 15 years, she has led and been part of design teams at various museums and science centres. As a researcher, she studies issues related to peacebuilding and development, memory, and transitional justice.

The book presentation will be followed by a discussion between the author and Marcela Torres (Viena Latina), moderated by Miller Díaz (University of Vienna).
