Abstract

The French Revolution was the first experiment in mass politics. From one day to the next, millions of people were suddenly engaged in political elections, debates, demonstrations, and administration. In this lecture, I discuss how different revolutionaries developed different political theories to respond to those events. This involved ideas about democracy, citizenship, participation, and accountability. I argue that French revolutionaries essentially developed three different, and antagonistic, models of democratic politics that remain with us till this day. I furthermore argue that seen from the perspective of the 2011 square movements and current critiques of the dominant liberal democratic model, there is still a lot we can learn about democracy and citizenship from the theories and experiments of the French revolutionaries.
