CeSCoS is dedicated to advancing the understanding and practice of solidarity in contemporary societies. We study how solidaristic commitments shape social, political, and institutional life, and how they can contribute to addressing complex societal challenges. While solidarity has long been recognised as a defining feature of modern democracies and welfare states, its role in fostering resilient, inclusive, and responsive institutions remains insufficiently understood.
Our research combines conceptual and normative scholarship with empirical, interdisciplinary, and problem-driven inquiry across a wide range of domains, including democratic governance, welfare systems, healthcare, digitalisation and AI, climate and environmental governance, and social inclusion. By bringing together researchers from different disciplines and methodological traditions, CeSCoS seeks to deepen understanding of how solidarity emerges, how it is institutionalised, and how it can inform the design and evaluation of public policy.
Beyond research, CeSCoS is committed to teaching, international collaboration, and engagement with policymakers and civil society. Our aim is to generate knowledge, methods, and practical tools that support the development of trustworthy, equitable, and democratically accountable institutions capable of responding to the challenges of the twenty-first century.
