Mission statement

The research area of International Politics at the Department of Political Science, University of Vienna, conducts empirical and theoretical research, especially on the topics of the crisis of liberal globalisation and the political economy behind, international environmental, climate and resource policies, socio-ecological transformation processes, and imperial mode of living.

The regional focus is currently on Europe and Latin America, with an emphasis on state and international policies as well as social movements and trade unions. Methodologically, many studies are orientated towards historical-materialistic policy analysis (HMPA).

Teaching

NEW: The Master’s programme “Governing Socio-Ecological Transformations” (starting in winter semester 2026/2027) provides students with broad empirical knowledge and an interdisciplinary, analytical and theoretical toolkit for understanding complex socio-ecological crises and their highly topical social implications.
