The Research Group Latin America at the University of Vienna (formerly Research Network Latin America) is organisationally affiliated with the Department of Political Science and is headed by Ulrich Brand with Tobias Boos as his deputy. The coordinator is Ingrid Fankhauser. Valerie Lenikus, Lina Schmid and Julia Sachseder work in the coordination team.
The Research Group Latin America aims to strengthen interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary Latin American studies at the University of Vienna and in national and international networks. As a hub for comprehensive scientific connections, it brings together research relevant to Latin America, deepens existing approaches and raises their profile. Through cooperation with academic institutions and non-scientific actors, the Latin America Research Group responds to the changing role of the subcontinent in the context of transformation and globalisation processes. In recent years, it has developed into one of the leading institutions for knowledge production, knowledge transfer and cultural translation in the discipline of Latin American studies. It develops research strategies, produces analyses and organises public events, international workshops and conferences, as well as colloquia on Latin America. A newsletter provides regular information on events, media reports, calls for proposals and job offers relevant to Latin America.
