Abstract
Diplomatic practices can be found in modern world society as well as in tribal and aristocratic societies. This book is the first to systematically examine and compare them from a sociological perspective. It focuses on the thesis that the main condition of all diplomacy is the recognition of borders. Unconventional questions are also answered: How does one negotiate with ritual artifacts or diplomatic impostors, for example? Can rudeness increase diplomatic autonomy? And how does espionage enable trustworthy diplomacy?
