Chair of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) Barbara Prainsack hands over their Opinion on “Democracy in the Digital Age” to EU Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica

On 21 June 2023, the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) published their Opinion on “Democracy in the Digital Age”.

The EGE is an independent multidisciplinary body appointed by the Commission President that advises on all aspects of Commission policies and legislation where ethical, societal and fundamental rights dimensions intersect with the development of science and new technologies.

Recent years have seen profound challenges to democracy, including grave populist and autocratic shifts. In this context, the EGE was asked by President von der Leyen to provide advice on the matter in the context of the Commission’s efforts to address challenges to democracy and to foster it. EGE Chair Barbara Prainsack, accompanied by Co-Chairs Nils-Eric Sahlin and Maria do Céu Patrão Neves, handed over the Opinion to Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica.
