Abstract:
Jair Bolsonaro was elected in Brazil in the aftermath of a parliamentary coup and neoliberal reforms. His government has pushed forward on these reforms and it has also taken environmental destruction to a new level. As his government alternates between climate change denial stances and faking concern for indigenous peoples, it is worth it to examine how the election of a far-right president plays into the dynamics of dependent capitalism in Latin America and in what ways this reinforces the pattern of unequal ecological exchange.
An event within the IPW Lectures, an international lecture series of the Department for Political Science, University of Vienna.
