Research Group Latin America

The Latin America Research Group is located at the Institute for Political Science of the University of Vienna under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ulrich Brand and is coordinated by Ingrid Fankhauser, MA. Together with other institutions in Austria, the research group Latin America aims to do justice to the changing role of the subcontinent through transformation and globalization processes. The research group is to develop into one of the leading institutions for knowledge production, knowledge transfer and cultural translation in the discipline of "Latin America".  A research strategy will be developed, analyses and research, colloquia, lectures and public events on Latin America will be coordinated and intensified, communication about and between scientific activities will be made visible, and exchange with international networks will be promoted. A scientific advisory board is to develop strategies and contribute to promoting Latin American research in the scientific community. The research group will receive financial support from the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) from October 2017 to June 2020. In addition to the intensification of research and scientific exchange, five scholarships for Latin American researchers are funded per year in 2018 and 2019 as part of the Etta Becker-Donner Programme and the annual conference of Austrian Latin American research is held in Strobl am Wolfgangsee. It is organised by the Austrian Latin America Institute in cooperation with Latin America Research Austria.

Research Network Latin America

The Research Network Latin America is a university-wide research network of the University of Vienna. It was established on September 1, 2020 for an initial period of four years. It is organizationally assigned to the Department of Political Science and is scientifically led by Prof. Ulrich Brand and Dr. Tobias Boos. Dr.in Isabella Radhuber is a scientific collaborator and the Network is coordinated by Ingrid Fankhauser, MA.

The Research Network Latin America is an initiative of the Rectorate to promote inter- and transdisciplinary Latin America research at the University of Vienna. The goal of the network is to further strengthen the cooperation of the participating internal and external academic institutions as well as the cooperation with non-scientific actors. The newly established Latin America Research Network is intended to act as a hub and infrastructure for broader scientific contexts in Austria and beyond. It aims to contribute to the bundling of Latin America-relevant research, as well as to intensify and to visualize existing connections.
